Youngquist was appointed to the office of attorney general by Governor Theodore Christianson on February 2, 1928 after the death of appointed Attorney General Albert Pratt. Youngquist resigned in November 1929 for a position in the U.S. Department of Justice. Christianson appointed former state senator and St. Peter attorney Henry Benson to replace Youngquist.
Cahill was a St. Paul attorney and former failed Democratic nominee for attorney general in 1926.
