Mueller was a resident of St. Cloud and former Stearns County District Court clerk. Mueller was backed by Arthur C. Townley's Nonpartisan League. The Republican state committeee (and additional county committees) repudiated Mueller's nomination and urged Minnesotans to back the Democrat Lethert instead.
Lethert was an attorney from St. Paul, Democratic candidate for the 4th CD in 1912, and for Governor in 1938.
