Hammond was an attorney from St. James and four-term U.S. Representative (CD 02, 1907-1915).
Lawler was an attorney from St. Paul, former U.S. Attorney (1886-1891), former Mayor of St. Paul (1908-1910), and Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in 1912. He would later win the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination in 1916 and the U.S. House nomination for the 4th CD in 1924.
