For the first time in state history Democrats did not field a nominee for Clerk of the Supreme Court and for the first time only one party placed a nominee in the race for the office. Fred Wheaton, the Democratic nominee for Clerk in 1906, was nominated again for the office in 1910 but chose not to make a candidacy filing.
Caswell was an attorney from St. Paul and former publisher of the Anoka Herald.
