Associate Justice Berry was elected to a fourth term without opposition. This was the first election for the office in which only one candidate appeared on the general election ballot. Berry died in office on November 8, 1887. Governor Andrew McGill appointed Loren Collins to fill the vacancy on November 16, 1887. Collins was a resident of St. Cloud, former Stearns County Attorney, former Mayor of St. Cloud (1876-1878, 1880), and sitting judge of the Seventh Judicial District.

Young was a resident of Minneapolis and Hennepin County District Court judge.
