Associate Justice Berry was elected to a third term. He was endorsed by the Republican Party. Berry's tally includes 41 votes for "J.M. Berry."

Mitchell was an attorney from Winona, District Court Judge in the Third Judicial District, candidate for Associate Supreme Court Justice in 1871, and eventual Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1881-1900). He was endorsed by the Democratic Party.

Mead was an attorney from Northfield and endorsed by the National Greenback Labor Party of Minnesota.
