Secretary of State Rogers was reelected to a second term.
Cogswell was a farmer from Aurora, former Republican state Representative (HD 15, 1859-1861) and Speaker of the House, Democratic Secretary of State nominee in 1863, and future state Senator (SD 12, 1872-1876).
Maynard was a former attorney and judge from New York who settled as a farmer in Elysian where he served in the state House (HD 17, 1866-1867; HD 22, 1867-1868). He was the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor in this 1867 cycle.
