Norton died in office on July 13, 1870. Former Republican U.S. Representative William Windom was appointed to the seat by Governor Horace Austin. Norton was an attorney from Winona and sitting state Senator (SD 11, 1857-1859, 1861-1862, 1864-1865).
George was a Colonel of the Second Minnesota Infantry, a Democratic nominee for an At-large U.S. House seat in 1860, and a nominee for Clerk of the Supreme Court in 1872.
