2024 Election Cycle

The DFL extended their statewide winning streak to 28 consecutive elections with Kamala Harris and Amy Klobuchar winning the state in elections for President and U.S. Senate respectively. The Harris victory extended the Demcoratic Party's longest-outside-the-South streak at 13 victories in a row for president, moving Minnesota into a tie for party's eighth longest all-time streak. Klobuchar's victory was the eighth consecutive DFL U.S. Senate win, tying the previous state partisan record in the direct election era previously acheived by the DFL from 1954 to 1976. The two major parties held each of their four respective U.S. House seats with all of the eight contests decided by double-digits. The DFL narrowly held the open SD 45 seat vacated by Kelly Morrison to run for CD 03 but the death of Senator Kari Dziedzic in SD 60 in late December means the 2025 legislative session begins with each party holding 33 seats. Republicans netted three seats in elections to the State House seemingly drawing even with the DFL at 67 seats each for the first time since the 1978 general election. However, HD 40B was ruled vacant due to a Ramsey County District Court finding the apparent DFL victor Curtis Johnson not satisfying residency requirements. Republicans thus began the legislative session in January 2025 with a 67 to 66 edge.
