Yellow Medicine County

Yellow Medicine County is located in Southwestern Minnesota along the South Dakota border and was established on March 6, 1871 by the State Legislature. The area was previously part of Redwood County. Yellow Medicine County is named for the Yellow Medicine River which flows through the eastern part of the county. The name comes from the Dakota word "Pejuhatazizi" referring to the long, yellow grasses the Dakota used for medicinal purposes. Yellow Medicine City was the county seat from 1872 to 1874. Granite Falls is now the county seat. Sources: Yellow Medicine County website. Minnesota Geographic Names, by Warren Upham (Minnesota Historical Society, 1969).
